This proposal updates the governance module deposit parameters to increase the OSMO-denominated proposal deposits.
Background
Osmosis governance proposals require a deposit to reach the voting period. The deposit is denominated in OSMO:
- Minimum deposit: 6,000 OSMO
- Expedited minimum deposit: 20,000 OSMO
- Minimum initial deposit ratio: 25% (the share of the minimum that must be posted to open the deposit period)
Because the deposit is denominated in OSMO, its real (USD) cost floats with the OSMO price. The deposit has been adjusted by governance several times to keep it economically meaningful, historically targeting a dollar level rather than a token count:
- Proposal 304 (dated 2022-08-05) raised the minimum deposit to 1,600 OSMO, explicitly targeting a ~$1,600 USD level.
- Proposal 940 (dated 2025-05-29) raised the minimum deposit from 1,600 to 6,000 OSMO (~$1,500 at the ~$0.25 OSMO price then) and raised the expedited deposit from 5,000 to 20,000 OSMO, keeping the ~$1,600 real-cost target Proposal 304 had set.
At the current OSMO price (~$0.034, checked 2026-07-15), deposits are worth only approximately $205 for a standard proposal and $683 for an expedited proposal, well below the levels governance last deliberately targeted. The USD cost to propose has drifted down with the OSMO price, which is the drift this proposal corrects.
Proposal
Increase both OSMO-denominated governance deposits by a uniform 5x, preserving the current 3.33x ratio between the expedited and standard tiers:
| Parameter | Current | Proposed |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum deposit | 6,000 OSMO (~$205) | 30,000 OSMO (~$1,020) |
| Expedited minimum deposit | 20,000 OSMO (~$683) | 100,000 OSMO (~$3,400) |
The proposed levels put the minimum deposit at ~$1,000 and the expedited deposit at ~$3,400 at the current OSMO price, and keep the expedited deposit at the same multiple of the minimum as today (3.33x).
